Comfort-First Support for Pediatric Blood Draw Anxiety

Comfort-First Support for Pediatric Blood Draw Anxiety

Poke Pals was created to address a common challenge in pediatric care:
many children experience significant fear and distress around blood draws.

Parent coaching focuses on preparation, regulation, and meaningful involvement, helping children approach blood collection with greater predictability and confidence — and helping caregivers feel prepared and supported.

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • Blood draws become long, emotional experiences
  • Your child becomes overwhelmed before or during appointments
  • You dread lab visits weeks in advance
  • Your child is developing fear-based reactions to medical settings
  • You feel unsure how to help

You’re not alone — and there is a better way to prepare.

What If Blood Draws Could Feel Different?

Parent coaching adapts the same nervous-system–aware principles used in clinical education:
calm first, clear explanation, and meaningful child involvement.

My work is grounded in a simple framework:

  • Calm the environment and expectations
  • Explain what’s coming in a developmentally appropriate way
  • Involve the child with choices and agency when appropriate

These principles reduce escalation and support long-term trust in medical care.

With Preparation and Practice, Children Can:

  • Understand what to expect before arriving
  • Use coping strategies that actually work
  • Participate with choice and control
  • Leave appointments feeling capable and proud
  • Build confidence for future medical experiences

What Parent Coaching Supports

  • Understanding your child: sensory triggers, learning style, strengths
  • Custom tools: visual supports, social stories, coping plans
  • Communication strategies: explaining procedures, role-play, medical language
  • Behavioral approaches: exposure, reinforcement, regulation, distraction
  • Working with your medical team: advocacy, accommodations, collaboration
  • Long-term skills: confidence, self-advocacy, preparation, celebration

Parent coaching is personalized, one-on-one educational support delivered via secure video call — focused on helping you support your child.
